The Society was founded in 1970 as an academic society for the advancement of science and engineering related to the atomic nucleus' and as a meeting point for the Belgians involved with nuclear energy in various organizations.
You will find here pictures of the creation of BNS (courtesy of Mr. Jacques Planquart).
During its first ten years the society was a local section of the ANS - American Nuclear Society. It was one of the 3 first overseas ANS local sections established: Europe-Belgium with Europe-Central and Europe-France. Due to this historical reason, the Belgian Nuclear Society remains presently an ANS Affiliated Society.
In 1980 it became the 'Belgian Nuclear Society' and was linked to the European ENS - European Nuclear Society which had been created in Paris in 1975. Today the ENS is a Federation of 24 national societies including several Eastern Europe national societies.

In 1994, a small history of BNS was published in the chapter 6 of the book "Un demi-siècle de nucléaire en Belgique - Témoignages" (abstract available here in pdf, only in French).
In 2008, BNS - Belgian Nuclear Society has signed a five years' agreement for cooperation with INS - Indian Nuclear Society.
In 2010, BNS celebrated his 40 Years inviting all the past BNS chairmen at the occasion of the Conference "60 Years of Nuclear Science in Belgium: Inspiring History, Exciting Future" on March 2nd, 2010 in Brussels.
